Wargame SITREP 230901 N4 Supply – Cube4Me takes on World at War 85: Storming the Gap (Lock ‘N Load Publishing, 2019)

This month was the second anniversary for Cube4Me, a company out of Poland that makes wargame accessories. I decided to take advantage of the savings and ordered two sets of wargame trays; one set for Next War: Poland 2nd Edition (GMT Games, 2017) and a second for World at War 85: Storming the Gap (Lock ‘N Load Publishing, 2019). This week I was able to try out the World at War trays. They worked out wonderfully!

When it comes to my wargame counters, I traditionally am a bagger. I love my Michaels little bead bags for organizing my counters. During COVID, I discovered the small toolboxes at Dollar Tree that are excellent for many games with low counter counts (best for ~200 counters or less).

Cube4Me sells a Wargame Tray Set for World at War 85: Storming the Gap that was arranged by Zilla Blitz and consists of two (2) 15mm deep, 20 compartment trays with lids. When I first looked at the number of counters and “only” 40 compartments, I was doubtful. But if Zilla Blitz says it works I should have faith…

My Cube4Me order was quickly shipped and arrived in a timely manner and in excellent shape. If you are in the States and order from overseas you likely know that decent arrival condition is not a guaranteed thing. I will also say that the shipping charge was awesome; my order shipped for less than I often have to pay for a flat-rate box to my oldest boy deployed overseas.

World At War 85: Storming the Gap has over 600 counters. The counters are 3/4″ in size and come pre-rounded. Organizing counters is made easy because of different color bands for each unit.

The result of my first pass is shown below. Most compartments have two units in it though some of the larger units are given two compartments. As you can see I ended up with one spare compartment on my first pass.

The box for World at War 85: Storming the Gap is oversized so the trays don’t sit snugly in the box.

The rest of the contents of World at War 85: Storming the Gap stack in nicely; once the box is closed there is no edge lift of significance.

As much as I like my baggies and small toolboxes the Cube4Me trays are phenomenal. The clear lids make seeing counters easy and the compartments are not so small that my Grognard fingers can’t dig counters out.

I will admit that this set, retailing at $9.36, doesn’t look favorably priced as compared to a set of GMT Games counter trays (20 compartments with lid) that sells—when in stock—at $20 for 10 trays. That said, I really like the all-clear material of the Cube4Me trays that make seeing into the compartments easy. The real test looks to be my next Cube4Me set for Next War: Poland 2nd Edition where Zilla recommends eight trays—2x 8mm deep, 20 compartment trays and 6x Standard USA playing card size, 10 mm deep trays. We will see!
