Blog Report 23-12 – A Traveling Gamer

Having spent the last two weeks on travel to Asia it is past time to catch up on all the gaming news in the RockyMountainNavy Gamer abode!

Traveling Diceless

I tried to get out to find new gaming stores when I was in Asia but just couldn’t make the timing work.

Seoul – I tried to make it out to Dice and Comics Cafe. Maybe next time…

Tokyo – Reached out to fellow gamers a bit late in the trip (not that I had alot of time anyway) but Yellow Submarine looked promising…

New Arrivals

Sharks! (Kristen Mott, The Dietz Foundation, 2023). At first I was torn as to whether to save this game as a Christmas present or play it as a family. Then my inner-Jim Dietz spoke up and said, “If you like it, you can always but another copy!” This one will land on the gaming table soon.

Hornyak, Nicholas, “The Snowfall Initiative,” Cortex Prime Spotlights, Direwolf, 2023.

The Snowfall Initiative follows the titular task force, assembled in 2044, as it conducts operations surrounding fissures that connect our world and the winter wasteland of Niflheim. These fissures, first discovered in 2042, are bleeding frigid air into Earth’s atmosphere, more than nullifying the effects of global warming on our planet. Now, Earth faces terrible blizzards, freezing temperatures, and spreading glaciers as a new ice age begins.

In this game, you play a specialist of the Snowfall Initiative. Maybe you play a recruit, or the cold has hardened you into something of a veteran. You might come from a military background, but the Initiative also needs diplomats who can communicate and secure truces with the natives of Niflheim, while scientists work every day to seal chaotic fissures and experts unravel the mysteries of sorcery. Either way, the world needs you now, more than ever, and Niflheim awaits.

But this isn’t your standard military operation. As you face off against powerful elves and indifferent monsters, your story is becoming one with the Epic; soon, you might find that your journey holds the fate of both worlds in the balance.

So eyes up, soldiers. We’ve got a lot of ground to cover, and it’s all covered in snow.

Newly Backed

Rule the Waves, Britannia! (Matt Haywood, Catastrophe Games, 2023) via Kickstarter. While card-games are not my usual thing this looks to be a good two-player, quick-playing wargame that RockyMountainNavy T and I can play as a weekday filler game.

SCOPE Panzer & Trilogy (Juan A Nacher, Draco Ideas, 2023) via Gamefound. Actually a collection of three card wargames that use somewhat similar game mechanisms. Good travel/filler games?

Scoundrels of Brixton Issue 2: The Clean Hands. (RPG Ramblings via Kickstarter). I like the first edition enough that backing the second was a no-brainer. Excellent adventure fodder using Cepheus Engine.

To Honor Grandfather (Chief Wessel Games via Kickstarter). “Play as young aliens in this competitive exploration and dice manipulation game set in the legendary Traveller universe!” Unlike the other games backed this one is taking some time to meet its goal. Frankly, I think the $30,000 goal is too ambitious (it has funded just under $10,000 since campaign start) but we will see.

Battle Card (David Thompson and Nils Johansson, Postmark Games via Kickstarter). I guess I have a thing going this month on small wargames…

Delivering

Goose Green (Carl Fung, Multi-Man Publishing, 2023).

Goose Green is a Tactical Combat Series (TCS) game covering the first land battle of the Falklands War on May 28, 1982. The outcome of this engagement was crucial for both the Argentinians and the British: The Argentinians needed to prove themselves against the professional British war machine, while the British needed a land victory to satisfy the government and the public after recently suffering naval losses. Originally intended as a raid, the clash became a full 14-hour battle resulting in a hard-fought British victory.
