The heart of my gaming collection. I am a Grognard and my purchase history in 2022 shows it.
Total Wargame Acquisitions in 2022 – 31
Accessories – 10 / Boardgames – 22 / Roleplaying Games – 27 / Wargames – 31
33.4% of total Gaming Purchases (31 of 90 items)
Core Games 22 / Expansions or Updates 9
Yes, I am a Grognard. Wargames compose the major segment of my hobby gaming in 2022 just like they have virtually every year since 1979.
Publishers – 14
Admiralty Trilogy Group 7 / Ares Games+ Dire Wolf 1 / Clash of Arms Games 1 / Compass Games 1 / Fan Made 2 / Flying Pig Games 2 / The Game Crafter 1 / GMT Games 6 / Hollandspiele 1 / Lock n’ Load Publishing 1 / Modiphius Entertainment 1 / Multi-Man Publishing 1 / Tiny Battle Publishing 2 / Worthington Publishing 1 / White Dog Games 1 / Yaquinto 2
While Admiralty Trilogy Group wins based on pure numbers, the fact is all those products are expansions. The next possible winner is GMT Games, but I note that of the six products acquired only three are core games. Surprisingly, I acquired only one Compass Games product this year which may be as much a statement of their production timelines as it is a reflection of my disinterest in much of what they published in the past year. Considering they are second-place on my preorder list I’m chalking their poor showing this year to selection…
Eras – 10
Ancients 2 / American Revolution 2 / 19th Century (includes American Civil War) 3 / World War I 2 / World War II 5 / Cold War 6 / Modern 2 / Multi-era 6 / Alternate History 1 / Science Fiction 2
Here you can see the continued hard turn I made this year into the Cold War. In reality, the “multi-era” products usually cover both the Cold War and Modern categories, which further cements the Cold War as the top era acquired.
Oldest/Newest/Median Age
Looking at the 20 core games, I see many “new to me” games with a few newly published but many more that are older.
- Oldest Wargame Acquired in 2022 – 1979 (2)
- Wargames Published in 2022 – 6
- Median Year Published of Wargames Acquired in 2022 – 2019
