TTRPG Roll 26-14 ~ Scoundrels of Brixton goes to the Savage Frontier (RPG Ramblings, 2025)

Scoundrels of Brixton: Savage Frontier by Jeffrey Jones (Creator-Designer) and Adam Kovac (Writer-Developer) is the fourth and latest booklet in the Scoundrels of Brixton series from RPG Ramblings. These slim booklets—48 pages and digest-sized like the original Traveller Little Black Books—provide, “A Sci-Fi Setting of Crime and Conflict.” Scoundrels is Cepheus Engine compatible which means you get to choose which flavor of Cepheus Engine you prefer to play.

The Scoundrels series is set in the Brixton System. That immediately sets it apart from the usual Traveller/Cepheus Engine derived setting which usually extends beyond a single star system. The Brixton System draws heavily on the Space Western, New Old West, Cyberpunk, and multiple sub-genres of Organized Crime tropes. Savage Frontier details the planet Veronca which is described as:

Veronca is an appealing planet for scoundrels looking to escape their enemies or strike it rich. But they’ll encounter no safety or fortune on this backwater hellworld, only a cruel environment and dingy outposts overrun with villains, slave traders and desperate inhabitants [and no Oxford comma, oh the horror!]. Space-going troublemakers find even more danger and intrigue on the moon and asteroid bases orbiting Brixton’s outer system, havens for pirate gangs, shady characters and nefarious organizations battling for control of deep space.

Savage Frontier, back cover

Savage Frontier is a combination sourcebook, gear book, and adventure hook compilations. Inside the Referee will find background for Veronca, several “Persons of Interest” (i.e. non-player characters of NPCs), two criminal groups, a private corporate entity, a 200-dton Heavy Trader and a 65-dton scavenger small craft. The ships come with the usual stats, deck plans, NPCs, gear locker, and the like.

Savage Frontier goes beyond the planet of Veronca to add “The Outer System.” Suffice it to say (as in no spoilers) that in the Outer System the first challenge is just to survive the environment and the second challenge requires players to brush up on dealing with pirates, mercenaries, and criminals (Oh my!).

I thoroughly enjoy the Scoundrels of Brixton setting and am anxious to incorporate Savage Frontier into my campaign. I, for one, enjoy leaning into the “lawless frontier” aspect of the New Old West and Space Western tropes. If you like Firefly or Serenity mixed with the criminal and gang aspects of The Expanse then Scoundrels of Brixton MUST be on your acquisition list (legally, of course, to support Jeffrey and Adam).

And I’m wanted — dead or alive.”

    Yessir.

Buying the physical book bundle was WAY cheaper than I expected. I think it came with the PDFs, but I’m definitely old-school and need paper in hand.

I had saved their first book on KS, but missed it. Ditto the second and third.

    -HOWEVER-

I just got the package with all 4 books in the mail and have only cracked open the first, but haven’t sat down to read through it yet.

It’s definitely up my “Shiny, let’s be bad guys” alley!

They all are an incredible bargain for the price. If you get them digital only it is even MORE affordable…but do yourself a favor (and support the design team) and get the books.
