Blog Report 25-2 ~ Swiss Time

This blog and my X feed were quiet over the past week as I took some Spring Break travel with Mrs. RockyMountainNavy. We decided—long before begun the Tariff Wars has—to visit Switzerland. Though the Dollar-to-Swiss Franc exchange rate was not favorable to us the trip was nonetheless very enjoyable.

We started in Montreux, sometimes called “The Swiss Riviera.” Even on a morning that would turn rainy it is beautiful. Mrs. RMN fell absolutely in love with Switzerland from this moment onward.

We then moved to Geneva with it’s famous Old Town and Jet d’Eau Fountain.

The last part of the trip was a few days in Zurich.

The food on the trip was equally awesome. While we tried the traditional Swiss Fondue the real winning food was the coffee (especially when paired with delightful pain au chocolat made with very thin chocolate wafers and not chocolate chips like us beastly Americans). We also discovered Raclette where the cheese is melted over potatoes. YUMM! Being Switzerland the chocolate was, of course, also above standard; where some hotels put chocolate mints on your pillow here we got entire chocolate bunnies. Then there was the Swiss or German beers and French or Italian wines… .

A very delightful part of the trip was the Swiss train system which is clean, safe, and very efficient; if the schedule says the train will depart or arrive at a certain time it arrives and departs to-the-minute. Even the SkyMetro airport train at Zurich was timed to-the-second; when it said arrival is 5-4-3-2-1 seconds at 0 the doors opened. A far, far cry from the DC Metro system I suffer with for work.

If anybody is thinking of traveling to Switzerland then downloading the SBB Mobile App is absolutely essential. Using the app we checked timetables and even purchased tickets online (purchases in advance cost less). The app gives not only the train times but even the local trams with easy to follow directions to get to stops. It was so nice to just drop in a location address from Trip Advisor or the internet and see the SBB Mobile App rectify the address to a local stop and provide directions.

My Swiss travel week was almost totally devoid of gaming. The closest I got to a roll of the die was perhaps this Roman Empire votive. Is that a d12, d16. or d20? Don’t know but it is nice to look at.

Thanks for the note about Switzerland and the SBB app, I downloaded it.
I have been invited to a conference on urban warfare at a place near Lausanne this September, and I am planning to go.
I have never been to Switzerland before.
