A look at my boardgame acquisitions in 2023 (technically Dec 25, 2022 thru Dec 24, 2023) as found in my 2023 RockyMountainNavy’s Wargame/Boardgame GeekList of Acquisitions. Of note, these numbers do NOT include my RPG acquisitions found at my 2023 RockyMountainNavy’s GeekList of RPG Acquisitions.
Total Wargame/Boardgame Acquisitions (less RPG) in 2023 – 73
Accessories – 15 / Boardgames – 17 / Wargames – 41
Boardgames Acquired in 2023 – 17
Boardgames comprised 23% of total wargame/boardgame purchases (17 of 73 items)
Core Boardgames – 13 / Boardgame Expansions – 4
Boardgames released in 2023 – 10 (9 core / 1 expansion) = 59% of total boardgames acquired in 2023. Am I a closet Cult of the New affiliate?
Publishers – 12
AEG – 3 / Blue Panther – 1 / Dietz Foundation – 1 / Fort Circle Games – 1 / Foul Play Games – 1 / Gale Force Nine – 3 / Mixlore – 1 / Osprey Games – 1 / R&R Games – 1 / Smirk & Dagger – 1 / Stonemaier Games – 2 / Strange Machine Games – 1
Not a very helpful statistic considering each of the publishers with “3” products taken in were mostly older games and expansions.
BoardGameGeek Subdomains – 4
Abstract 1 / Card 1 / Family 6 / Strategy 9
A few of the games categorized as boardgames are “controversial” in that—unlike some wargamers or BGG personalities—I DON’T call certain titles wargames. These include War Chest – The Siege Expansion (abstract) and several other titles I consider strategy boardgames including Robotech: Reconstruction, Land & Freedom, General Orders: World War II, and Votes for Women.
Average cost of each Boardgame item – $28.78
Most Expensive Boardgame – Expeditions (Stonemaier Games) – $68
Least Expensive Boardgame – Ramen Fury (Mixlore) – $9.99
As other postings will reveal, my “average” cost for a boardgame item is actually quite similar to my “average” cost of a wargame item (both hovering around the $30 mark).
(Of note, this year expansions all count as “free” since all were gifts or acquired as part of a core game buy)
