Using Savage Worlds Explorer’s Edition (Pinnacle Entertainment Group, 2008).
In the mid- to late-2000s, I experimented with many other roleplaying game (RPG) engines. I was never a Dungeons & Dragons player so I did not play the 3.0 or 3.5 editions though I did play around with d20 Modern which was an Open Game License version. I got deep into CORTEX with Serenity and Battlestar Galactica and, as will soon see, the then-new Mongoose Traveller as well as some FATE 3.0. I also picked up Savage Worlds: Explorer’s Edition (SWEX). At a mere $9.99 this was a very affordable new RPG.

Looking back on the core rulebook these from my perspective today, I see SWEX as an Adventure Wargame. To me, and Adventure Wargame is a wargame with heavy RPG elements or an RPG with heavy combat elements. An example of an Adventure Wargame is the Five Parsec From Home series which are skirmish wargames with heavy RPG elements. In SWEX you can do an investigation but that is just the build up to the “Fast, Fun, and Furious” combat which is certainly the focus of the rules.
Lee Smith
It’s a character but given the combat-focus rules of SWEX this one feels like a fish out of water. Maybe stick to combat characters for SWEX…
