TTRPG Roll 26-6 ~ James Bond 007: Role Playing in Her Majesty’s Secret Service #charactercreationchallenge

Using James Bond 007: Role Playing in Her Majesty’s Secret Service (Victory Games, 1983).

While the core game engine for James Bond 007 survives into the 21st century the design themes of this version, centered on the Sean Connery/Rodger Moore versions of James Bond adventures in the 1960s through the early 1980s, may seem a bit dated today by today’s crowd. While I enjoy the Dalton/Brosnan/Craig movie characters this version needs updating to “keep up.” Nonetheless, James Bond 007 is a still a great game to me.

Character generation in James Bond 007 is certainly “of the day” and clearly a reflection of era the game was published in. For example, “Computers” is not a skill but a Field of Experience:

Field of Experience: Expertise in a field of study — science, law, sports, etc. — acquired by a character before joining M.I.6. When a Field is used in play, it does not involve a task (see below). Rather, it simply indicates that a character would be knowledgeable about things involving that area. The use of Fields of Experience is optional by the Gamemaster.

Core Rulebook, p. 7

James Bond 007 is also one of the only RPGs I know that has a Multiplication Table on the Character Sheet. Intimidating at first but once you understand that Ease Factor 5 is the baseline and difficulty goes UP as the Ease Factor goes DOWN it makes sense.

So, met Sean Moore a “Rookie” M.I.6 agent and former journalist. Now working for a “Non-Governmental Agency” pursuing “research” on issues of importance. A Close Personal Tie, however, could threaten his career longevity.
