Boardgame Bulletin 25-1 ~ Christmas Bounty Star Hunter Wars

This past Christmas I was gifted but a single boardgame. The RockyMountainNavy Boys picked up Star Wars: Bounty Hunters (Zygomatic, 2024) for me to play against me. Bounty Hunters is a light card drafting game where players compete to capture bounties (aka Star Wars good…beings). There are four types of cards; Targets, Hunters, Contracts, and the Jawa Market. Players start with one card of each type in their hand. Play in a turn is a simple DRAW a new card, PLAY a card from your hand, then PASS the unused cards. Targets have three different “shield” values. Players use Hunters and Droids (from the Jawa Market)—each with different “attack” values—to capture targets. Contracts award bonus points for different combinations of targets captured. Players also can accumulate crates (loot boxes?) for bonus points. The first player to capture four (4) targets triggers the endgame after which points are counted to determine the winner.

When I first read the rules for Star Wars: Bounty Hunters I immediately thought of Sushi Go for no other reason than the card passing game mechanism. While the rules for Bounty Hunters are close to the simplicity of Sushi Go there is more strategy required…but not too much. Bounty Hunters is a very light strategy game that can be played by as few as two players though the card passing works better with at least three people. The simultaneous play also benefits from plenty of open communication, likely to include lots of Star Wars quotes with bad accents.

Given the quick playing time (~20 minutes) Star Wars: Bounty Hunters will likely serve as a light filler game in the RockyMountainNavy Game Night rotation. There is a very good chance that I might see my gift bountied off to the college boy’s gaming stash as this is a perfect light card game for RMN Jr. and his group of friends.
