Well, the U.S. presidential election of 2024 is over. Personally, I am a bit disappointed as I was promised that there would be riots and the fall of civilization. Instead, on the Wednesday after the election I found myself back in the office with the same problems just a different day. Well, if the election did not end the world, perhaps some roleplaying game (RPG) adventures can stand in for some of the feeling. Based on several of my most recent RPG acquisitions I am now better postured for some post-apocalyptic gaming as well as some other adventures in a far future.
By the way, the seven items listed below cost me a whole $9.48. Inflation!
Twilight: 2000 (4th Edition)
Aunt Natasha’s Glorious People’s Soviet Union of Pre-Owned Vehicles Emporium (Lutra Gaming, Free League Workshop, 2024 – $2.99). Fifteen pages of vehicle descriptions. Yeah, Soviet cars sucked but in the Twilight: 2000 world their simplicity is useful.
Bread or Bullets? Alternative economics and ammunition rules (Farangian, Free League Workshop, 2024 – $1.99). The secondary subtitle is, “An alternate system for barter and ammunition weight and value in Twilight 2000 4th edition.” This 23 page booklet is perhaps the most useful when playing a campaign in a society where national economies do not exist any more. Glad this is just a RPG supplement and not a survival guide for 2025.
Expanded Skills: A Character Expansion for Twilight 2000 4th Edition (Leonpoi, Free League Workshop, 2024 – $2.00). Ten pages of reworked skills. Not necessary to play but a potentially useful variant for character generation.
Scrounging: An alternative to the official rules (Free League Workshop, 2024 – Free). Four pages of not-necessary but potentially useful rule. Again, an RPG supplement and not another 2025 survival guide.
The Expanse-ive Traveller
The Expanse RPG – Transport Union Edition Quickstart (Green Ronin, 2024 – Free). The original The Expanse RPG is set in the era of the first three books (Leviathan Wakes, Caliban’s War, and Abaddon’s Gate) This new quickstart moves the setting to the Transport Union era, a 30-year period between the end of book 6 (Babylon’s Ashes) and the beginning of book 7 (Persepolis Rising). Yes; The Expanse RPG is based on the books not the TV series.
Long Flight System Ships (Robert DeVoe, Travellers’ Aide Society – Mongoose Publishing, 2024 – $0.50). A collection of non-jump capable spacecraft that might commonly be found in a given star system. Designed for use with Mongoose Traveller 2nd Edition these ships can be used by just about any Traveller rules variant or Cepheus Engine-driven game.
Quick and Dirty Vehicle Combat Rules (Omer Golan-Joel, Travellers’ Aid Society – Mongoose Publishing, 2024 – $2.00). A nine-page booklet for vehicle combat written in the spirit of the original Little Black Books which the author insists on calling ‘Proto-Traveller.’ Personally, I find that characterization of Classic Traveller offensive. Nobody calls Gary Gygax’s first Dungeons & Dragons edition ‘Proto-D&D.’ Sure, the first edition is “simple” and “less developed” than later editions but it was a complete game and deserves recognition as such and not dismissal as a mere ‘prototype.’
