Boardgame Bulletin 24-14 / Book Shelf 24-26 / Wargame SITREP 24-53 ~ New arrivals, Kickstarter benders, and pending play

New Arrivals

Close the Atlantic: World War III (designer Michael Raymond, self-published through Blue Panther, 2024). A solo game of convoy operations by the US/NATO across the Atlantic in a modern-day war against Russia. First pass at reading rules looks/feels more like a “Cold War Gone Hot” wargame but will see how that changes—or not—once game gets to the table.

Arcs (designer Cole Wehrle, Leder Games, 2024). Technically not in hand yet (arrives Monday). I missed the crowdfunding campaign and decided to pick up through retailer. I understand, and agree with, the way Leder Games distributed the game the way they do (backers before retailers) but do not understand the long wait time in between. Yes, I hear stories of production scheduling issues but it has been nearly six months between the release of the games to backers and retail distribution. I came very close to cancelling my order more than once and, frankly, with my game literally a day away I still have a nagging feeling that I made the wrong decision.

Kickstarter Benders

Here I am writing about issues I have with crowdfunding distribution and yet I backed three new campaigns just this past week.

Atomic Robo and the Agents of C.H.A.N.G.E. (Tesladyne LLC via Kickstarter). I like the Atomic Robo series but have not kept up in a while. I also have the Atomic Robo Roleplaying Game from Evil Hat Productions (2014) that runs on the FATE Core System. Maybe some new adventure inspirations?

Emergency Operations Center Board Game – Wildfire Mayhem (designer Arthur Simental via Kickstarter). Billing itself as “The Ultimate Disaster Response Boardgame” I am interested in this game from the perspective of using a wargame for other training and education and the fact it is based on the Waldo Canyon Fire in Colorado in 2012; a fire I watched get within a dozen miles of my house. One of just a few “wild” wildfires in the area I lived in for about a decade. Caution: This is a first-time creator and the production timeline (December 2024 delivery) seems…ambitious.

Root: The Homeland Expansion (Leder Games via Kickstarter). While I loathe to call myself a Root completionist (I do not follow the RPG side of the franchise) when it comes to the boardgame I want all the expansions, though not necessarily all the little add-ons.
