#RPGaDay2024 – Day 31 – Game or gamer you miss

My first roleplaying game was the Little Black Book boxed edition of Traveller which I acquired in early 1980. I have played Traveller ever since then into even today. So I guess I never really miss the game in the tangible sense of being separated from the product. But I do miss the absolute wonderful adventures a group of middle school kids could create. Without knowing it we ran a real scum & villainy campaign (before it was really a thing) mixed with a bit of Robin Hood. Our characters lived the (original) A-Team mantra:

“Today, still wanted by the government they survive as soldiers of fortune.
If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them…
maybe you can hire The A-Team.”

What I miss the most about those games is the innocence; we played and made stories for fun without political correctness or “isms” or other agendas. Even as we moved to games with pre-defined settings we still blazed our own trail, refusing to be constrained by the canon or somebody else’s definition of “the right way to play.” Our stories didn’t have a “message” other than to say we are creative.
