With summer coming to an end and school coming back into session, the RockyMountainNavy Family Weekend Game Night reopened for the Fall 2024 season with Mission 1 of The Mandalorian: Adventures by Corey Konieczka from Unexpected Games (2024). RMN T and myself played in two-player mode with RMT T taking The Mandalorian and myself playing IG-88.
I had previously unboxed the game (see my reaction here) and read the rules so, following the set-up as directed in the rule book, I briefly explained the game play to RMN T before we were off.
Our first game took about an hour to play in part because we were a bit slow in choosing actions. We eventually won and discussed the game over refreshments.
From the picture above experienced players of The Mandalorian: Adventures might pick out a few problems with the game end state. Most signifigantly, we discovered late in the game that we were misplaying the Disrupt Token rule. The rules state that when playing a Crisis or Event, the cards and Disrupt Token in the action slot are removed (see Event Step for 6 or more and 5 on page 9 column 1 as well as Sample Event Step 6 on page 11). The rules for Disrupt Token on page 11 go on to state that, “When an effect disrupts an action, take a random disrupt token from the pool of facedown tokens and place it number-side-up on that action slot. If this happens during the Event Step and causes an action slot to have five or more total strength, resolve an event (and possibly a crisis) for that slot after resolving the current event.” Somehow we misinterpreted that meaning but we understand now and will be good-to-go for future missions.
RMN T gave The Mandalorian: Adventures an enthusiastic thumbs up. He found it highly thematic, easy to learn and play, and with just the right amount of agonizing decisions to be made. They cannot wait for next week to play another mission. For myself the first mission played better than I expected (my expectations were admittedly a bit low but, whatever) and I too look forward to playing the rest of the missions in the coming months (weeks if RMN T gets his way!).
