Several new wargames and gaming accessories reported for duty in March 2024.
Swarming HMS Duncan: A Naval Wargame Scenario is a small digital downloadable pdf product from Scoutbrush Productions available on WargameVault for a mere $4.50. This four-page product includes paper standees for the Royal Navy and Russians for recreating the 2018 confrontations in the Black Sea. The scenario is designed for any modern naval miniatures rules but is aimed at Harpoon V (Admiralty Trilogy Group) players.
Baetis Campaign, 211 BC is the feature game in C3i Magazine Nr. 37 shipping in March from RBM Studio. Baetis is marketed as C3i Series Volume III. I am not necessarily a fan of the Ancients period but the C3i Series games often prove to be smaller, more digestable games that are relatively easy to get to the gaming table and play.
Drive on Metz is a bonus insert game in C3i Magazine Nr. 37. This game is one of the go-to starter wargames that commonly referenced as such by wargame practitioners. Good to see a new edition in print!
The Spanish Road is another bonus bonus insert game in C3i Magazine Nr. 37. I don’t know much about this game but here is the description from BoardGameGeek:
The game reflects in an easy way to play the logistical, diplomatic and military challenges that the Spanish Armies had when crossing the Spanish Road from Lombardy to Flanders in the period from 1567 to 1634. The game reflects the logistical and military challenges of ‘The Spanish Road’ and its strategic importance during the 30 Years War (1618- 1648).
Ariete: The Battle of Bir el Gubi, Libya November 1941 is the 17th game in the Tactical Combat Series by Multi-Man Publishing and covers the Italian Ariete Division’s defense of Bir el Gubi, Libya, on November 19, 1941. I am a relative newcomer to TCS with my only previous game being Goose Green. The bagged version of Ariete was on sale as part of MMP’s Flash Sale at half price so I judged it worth the expense.
Also on sale was from MMP was Autumn For Barbarossa which is a Standard Combat Series (SCS) game covering the the struggle to seize Smolensk in the late summer of 1941. Unlike TCS, I have several SCS games and usually enjoy the series. The “war engine” approach to game design used in SCS with a set of Standard Series Rules and then Game Series Rules is very approachable. I especially enjoy exploring the “gimmick” usually found in the Game Series Rules that introduce a special game mechanism to highlight some unique aspect of the battle or campaign depicted. In Autumn for Barbarossa that special game mechanism is the “Hitler Roll” where German mechanized forces are taken off the map and air support cut in half. The German player does not know when this will happen and has to achieve their objectives before having their forces gutted.
Chessex Speckled Space 16mm d6 Dice Block. Totally unneeded but good for sci-fi wargames.
Maitys Clear Transparent Game Card Stands. With the print-n-play scenario Swarming HMS Duncan above I needed wanted some card stands. Bought blindly on Amazon, these are a bit bigger than I was thinking about but likely will do well.
