David Drake Standing Down1 with Robosoldiers
I was deeply saddened this last week to hear of the death of David Drake. For me he will always be the voice of Hammer’s Slammers.
One of the last books where Mr. Drake published in is Robosoldiers: Thank You For Your Servos, an anthology edited by Stephen Lawson for Baen Books in 2022. Mr. Drakes contribution, “Uncovered Data,” is in many ways a fitting last story as it relates to an interrogator; the same job Drake himself performed in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War in an armored cavalry regiment.
Caine on
The latest in the Caine Riordan series by Charles E. Gannon, Protected Species, delivered this past two weeks. I started reading but put it aside when David Drake passed to read Robosoldiers. Now to get back to this continuing story of a lost military unit.
Storming the Gap
The most recent new book taken in is Storming the Gap: First Strike – A World at War 85 Novel by Brad Smith and printed by wargame publisher Lock n’ Load. Yes, this is a novel tie-in to the wargame World at War 85: Storming the Gap (Lock n’ Load, 2019) that I picked up on sale along with the hefty World at War 85: Storming the Gap – The Expansion Pack.
- “Standing Down” was one of the stories originally published in the first Hammer’s Slammers volume of 1979. ↩︎

Sad news. I knew he was ill but it is a losss for us all.
Cheers,
Pete.
David Weber writes the Honor Harrington series. David Dark wrote Hammer’s Slammers and the RCN series, along with other books running the genre from science fiction, military history/fiction, and fantasy.
That’s what happens when you write too fast…
Hey, there’s an audiobook version of Storming the Gap: First Strike in fact, all of the World of War 85 novels. But Storming the Gap and Storm and Steel: Second Wave were narrated by yours truly, yes I do that professionally occasionally too. 😉
